MARAUDERS SIGN ENGLAND NATIONAL CHAMPION SOCZEWKA

McMaster Marauders men's volleyball Head Coach, Dave Preston, announced the addition of European phenom Bartek Soczewka to the program's 2021 freshman class.

Born in Olysztyn, Poland, raised in London, England, Soczewka currently competes for the Richmond Docklands volleyball club – a program in the top senior English league – as well as a junior on the England Indoor & Beach National team.

"Anytime we receive interest from an overseas student-athlete, it requires us to do a little more homework," Preston continued, "in doing so, we know that Bartek is a complete player. He's a good defender, and his net skills are solid – he can serve, pass, and play both corners."

"Bartek's experience indoors, and on the beach, will allow him to contribute to the program right away. He's competed in big eve
nts, and fully understands what is required to succeed."

Soczewka has not only competed on big stages, but he's come away with hardware numerous times. His resume includes a U15, two-time U16 and U18 Indoor National Championship, as well as a U16 Beach National Championship, and U18 runner-up performance in England.

On the European stage, the 6-foot-3, outside hitter, has placed as high as seventh at the U17 Northern European Indoor Championship, as vice-captain for England. The following season, Soczewka helped England place eighth at the U19 version of the same championship – starting as left side on both occasions for his country.

"His resume is impressive but what I was equally impressed with was how he carried himself," explained Preston. "His attributes were on full display during our video discussions, and it didn't take long for me to realize this young man gets it."

In 2020, Soczekwa captained his side to a third straight U18 Indoor National championship campaign, but the final could not take place due to COVID-19 restrictions – a season he was named Most Valuable Player.

He was selected for the U20 CEV European championships, but Team England withdrew one week prior to the competition.

"The reason behind joining McMaster was the combination of exceptional academics, as well as athletics," said Soczewka. "I can't wait to train alongside other athletes striving towards similar goals within the sport."

Making his arrival to McMaster this fall, Soczewka will be entering the Economics program. His debut in Burridge Gym is still uncertain, as the 2021-22 season has yet to be announced.
