Czernuszka and Sergeant Headline Honourees at 2019 Marauder Scholar Breakfast

The soccer duo took home the Dr. Mary E. Keyes and Dr. Jack Kennedy Awards as McMaster’s top scholar athletes

On a morning that saw hundreds of McMaster student-athletes recognized for their exceptional work in the classroom, a pair of soccer players led the pack at the 2019 Marauder Scholar Breakfast hosted by the Department of Athletics and Recreation at CIBC Hall.

A 2019 biology graduate and member of the 2018 OUA bronze-medal-winning Marauders women's soccer program, Emma Czernuszka was named as the recipient of the Mary E. Keyes Award as Mac's preeminent female scholar-athlete in 2018-19.

On the men's side, third-year arts and science student and First Team OUA All-Star Anand Sergeant received the Dr. Jack Kennedy Award as a standout among his peers both in the classroom and on the pitch.

The two headed a class of 376 McMaster student-athletes recognized as Marauder Scholars on Friday, a designation awarded to those who achieve a 9.5 grade point average or higher over a minimum of 24 academic units while competing for a Marauders varsity team or club.

Of those, 104 were additionally recognized as U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians, which denotes their participation in national-level sports while maintaining the above standards, and another 124 were awarded as OUA Academic Achievement Award winners by maintaining the high academic standard while competing in a conference-level sport.

McMaster's Faculty of Science boasted the most Marauder Scholars of any single faculty on campus, with 164 science students achieving the standard.

Czernuszka's recognition Friday came after she graduated this past spring with an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and minor in Psychology, having cracked the Dean's Honour List on three occasions over her four years at McMaster.

A regular volunteer in both the Hamilton and Toronto communities, Czernuszka was an executive member of the Right to Play at McMaster club, as well as a team representative for McMaster Athletes Care, where she participated in weekly visits at Hamilton's Living Rock Centre. Czernuszka also donated her time to various healthcare organizations in her hometown, including the Etobicoke General Hospital, Kinetic Life Physiotherapy Clinic and the RBC/Dorothy Ley Hospice.

Currently completing his third year of McMaster's inter-disciplinary Arts & Science program, Sergeant is a two-time Dean's Honour List member, Academic All-Canadian and Marauder Scholar.

In the summer of 2019, he volunteered with the "All About Us" Indigenous Data Workshop, which focused on developing data capacity in Indigenous communities, and was part of the writing group that compiled the group's summary paper.

He has been a research assistant at the Peter Boris Centre of Addictions Research, where he studied the behavioural economic trajectories of alcohol misuse in Hamilton. He also volunteers his time with McMaster Athletes Care through its weekly visits, and coaches with the Mount Hamilton Youth Soccer Club.

Returning to the ranks of the OUA All-Star First Team in 2019, Sergeant has served as an alternate captain for the Marauders for the past two seasons.
