Women's Soccer: Late Lead Evaporates as Mac Draws York 2-2

An injury time hand ball saw the Lions level Thursday's match late on.

Box Score With a 2-0 second-half lead in hand, the Marauders looked well on their way to their first victory of 2017 Thursday in North York.

But, after seeing their advantage halved in the 61st minute, the Marauders watched as an injury-time decision brought an end to their lead altogether, and forced McMaster to share the points for a fourth time, in a 2-2 draw with the York Lions.

The duo of Maila Carboni and Faye Stavropoulos had goals for the Marauders (0-1-4) on the night, with Carboni's marker standing as her third in just five games to open the season.

The Marauder striker Carboni opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, scoring what would prove to be the opening half's only goal, as her team carried a 1-0 lead into the break.

Mere minutes after the resumption of play, Stavropoulos doubled the lead with her first goal of the season in the 53rd minute.

But the home side pegged their visitors back in the 61st, when Ashley Nator got the Lions on the board, setting the table for a heartbreaking finish.

With the teams into injury time and McMaster still in pole position, the Marauders were called for a hand ball in the box, giving the Lions a spot kick which Christina Morelli duly converted to level the match and steal a point for the hosts.

NEXT UP: McMaster returns home to Ron Joyce Stadium on Sunday, September 10, when they play host to the Guelph Gryphons. Kickoff for the matinee contest is 1:00 p.m.
