Box Score The season was nothing short of perfect for the McMaster Marauders. They closed out their OUA regular season undefeated with a 17-0 record after a three-set sweep of the RMC Paladins Saturday at the Burridge Gym.
Closing out the regular season gave Marauders coach Dave Preston the perfect opportunity to give some playing time to the younger members of the squad, ahead of the OUA playoffs and a potential return to the national championship tournament.
What lacked in experience was certainly made up for in excitement, as the Marauders put on a showcase of what is to come in the next few seasons. Sophomore outside Matt Passalent shined, hitting over 70 per cent as he led McMaster with 14.5 points. He would come just half of a point short of matching his career high of 15, which came against RMC in his freshman season.
For RMC, outside hitter Dale Towe would have a team high of 11 points on the night and enjoy a passable hitting percentage of .200. The Paladins hitting percentage dipped into negative territory through two sets, and the team finished with a combined rate of just .068.
The opening set saw the routine starters of the Marauders take the court and the early lead with a 25-9 set win against RMC.
After that early breakthrough, youth took the wheel for the home side.
In a rematch of their penultimate match of the season, the Marauders will meet the Queen's Gaels in an OUA quarterfinal at the Burridge Gym on Saturday, March 4. First serve for that knockout encounter is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
