Women's Volleyball: Marauders Squander Two-Set Lead in Opening Loss to Rams

McMaster lost to Ryerson for the first time since November 2014.

Box Score Leading by two sets on home court, McMaster appeared well in control of their OUA season-opening match against the Ryerson Rams Friday.

But it all unraveled rather quickly, as Ryerson reeled off three consecutive sets to overhaul their deficit and knock off the U SPORTS no. 4-ranked McMaster 3-2 (21-25, 19-25, 25-14, 25-16, 15-7).

The outside hitting combination of Janelle Albert and Cailin Wark led the way for the Rams in the victory, with 19 and 14 kills respectively, while Albert chipped in 15 digs on the defensive end.

McMaster's veteran middle, and 2016 OUA First-Team All-Star, Maicee Sorensen was far and away the match's most efficient player, notching a game high of 21 kills on 28 attempts without an error (75 per cent). She added four and a half blocks for a game-high 25.5 points.

But the Marauders struggled offensively as a group, steadily declining after hitting 31 per cent as a group in the second set. Combined, McMaster hit just 10 per cent, and saw three players enter negative hitting percentages.

NEXT UP: The Marauders welcome the Waterloo Warriors to Burridge Gym on Friday, Nov. 3.
