Box Score It all came undone in three minutes. Two first half goals against the two-time defending CIS champion York Lions had McMaster dreaming of a truly impactful victory on home soil.
But, under the lights and the strange late-night circumstances of a half-hour lightning delay, the Marauders unraveled. Three goals in just under three minutes at the beginning of the second half doomed McMaster, as the CIS no. 7-ranked Marauders fell to the Lions 4-2.
It was McMaster's first loss of the young season, and the first time that the Marauders had conceded a goal in 2016.
York's Dena Iezady led the charge, scoring twice, while Cristian Cavallini and Milan Beader also reached the back of the net for York.
Dusan Kovacevic and Yunus Mollayev had both of Mac's markers in the opening half.
The rookie striker Kovacevic caused the Ron Joyce Stadium crowd to erupt when he opened the scoring in just the ninth minute of play. Scoring his second goal of the season, he reeled in a through ball from Marco Gennaccaro and slotted past Lions keeper Andrew D'Souza.
Gennaccaro was making his first appearance in the Marauders lineup in 2016, after rehabbing an injury, and provided instant quality in distribution.
He would put another goal on a teammates plate in the 32nd minute, finding Mollayev at the far post, who took the short and quick approach past D'Souza to double Mac's lead.
Complacency was denied shortly, when Iezady was taken down in the box by Mac keeper Kieran Doyle-Davis, and a penalty was awarded. The veteran Lion took his spot kick well, cutting the Marauders lead in half in the 40th minute.
That proved to be a harbinger of things to come, as York would pounce on the home side just after the break to overhaul the match.
Cavallini took the briefest of moments to run onto a ball at the end of Mac's penalty area, before hammering a rising shot into the far corner past Doyle-Davis to tie the match in just the 46th minute.
That moment of class was chased by calamity, as a pair of giveaways by the Marauders gifted the Lions two more goals in quick succession, with Beader and Iezady the lucky recipients in the 48th and 50th minutes.
NEXT UP: The Marauders will look to bounce back as they host the Laurier Golden Hawks at Ron Joyce Stadium on Saturday.
