Women's Soccer: Lack of Finishing Costs Mac in 2-1 Loss

Box Score They controlled play for much of their Wednesday night match against the York Lions, but poor finishing ultimately cost the Marauders all three points. Despite pouring 15 shots at York keeper Taylor Grant, Mac came away with only a single goal, and suffered their second loss of the season, 2-1.

Christina Morelli and Nour Ghoneim had goals for the Lions, who improved to a perfect 4-0 atop the OUA West standings.

Mac's lone goal came courtesy of striker Maila Carboni, who struck in injury time. With the loss, McMaster fell to 0-2-2 on the season.

The visitors grabbed their lead early, as Morelli found a soft spot in the Marauders defence just six minutes into play at Ron Joyce Stadium. McMaster increased their offensive pressure as the first half wore on, able to stretch York's defenders with the long ball.

Carboni, who had eight shots and six on goal Wednesday, very nearly levelled the match in the 25th minute, but saw an initial chance cleared off the line and a second blocked away.

York grabbed an insurance marker almost immediately after the resumption of play in the second half, as Charline D'Mello controlled the ball outside the Mac box and found Ghoneim, who slotted near post past Marauder keeper Cristina Abbatangelo.

Mac turned up the pressure yet again, but a lack of finishing ultimately cost them. Carboni would grab a consolation goal by bundling home in extra time, but it was too little, too late.

The Marauders continue their home stand on Saturday, when they welcome the Laurier Golden Hawks to Ron Joyce Stadium for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
