Box Score Quality of finishing trumped all Wednesday, as McMaster's eye for goal proved to be the difference at Ron Joyce Stadium. Despite losing out in possession and looking suspect in the tackle throughout the night, the Marauders beat the Waterloo Warriors 2-0 through their superior finishing in the final third.
Matthew Monteiro and
Marco Gennaccaro each scored for the Marauders (5-4-3), who gained ground on the fourth-placed Laurier Golden Hawks in the OUA West. Mac now sits just a point back of Laurier, and will face the Golden Hawks in Waterloo on October 20.
The game had barely gotten underway when the Marauders put their stamp on it, as
Yunus Mollayev's cross from the corner was nodded in by Monteiro in just the third minute of play.
Waterloo quickly worked their way into the match, however, probing well for an equalizer and holding a noticable edge in possession for the remainder of the first half.
Their struggles to cap a chance saw the Warriors miss a glorious opportunity to level the match in the 76th minute, when Jae Jin Lee drifted free of a mark in the box, but couldn't connect with the low cross that strove to find him.
Four minutes later, McMaster punished their opponents for their wastefulness, as
Sulayman Lyons cross was headed home by Gennaccaro at the far post to put the night's result beyond doubt.
