Box Score They enjoyed the lion's share of the possession and scoring chances on Wednesday, but the Marauders were unable to punish the Lancers with their opportunities, and ultimately paid the price in extra time.
After equalizing in the 71st minute, the visitors struck for a winner in the 99th, as Windsor advanced to the second round of the OUA playoffs with a 2-1 victory over McMaster.
Lacey Marcoux and Cassie Chretien had goals for the Lancers in the matchup of the four and five seeds in the OUA West. Maureen Mai had the lone tally for the Marauders in the loss.
Chances came early and often for McMaster on Wednesday, as they began the night with purpose. Spending much of the first half in the Lancers half, the Marauders put several balls into the box, but could not find the finishing touch. The teams entered the halftime break, with the visitors lucky to enjoy a scoreless draw.
Just 10 minutes into the second, Mai broke the deadlock when she launched a solo break into the Windsor area, beating a pair of defenders before looping a low shot inside the far post.
That lead held until the 71st minute, when Marcoux got on the end of a ball in the Marauders box, and fired the Lancers level.
Neither team could find the decisive goal in regulation, and the match went into extra time, where it took just nine minutes for Windsor to fashion a lead. Chretien beat her marker in a foot race and found space at the near post, where she slotted past Cristina Abbatangelo to give Windsor the 2-1 advantage.
With little time to work with, the Marauders were unable to craft an equalizer, and saw their season end at the first playoff hurdle.
