The two teams find themselves in radically different positions, but both Marauder soccer programs are equally hungry for points as they look toward their final home games of the season this weekend.
McMaster welcomes the Laurier Golden Hawks to Ron Joyce Stadium on Saturday before the York Lions visit to wrap up the teams' season series on Sunday.
Depleted by injuries and hanging onto the final playoff position in the OUA West by a thread, the Marauder women are battling to stay alive with just six games remaining in their conference schedule. McMaster currently sits sixth in the division's standings with 10 points from 10 matches, and while technically trailing the Brock Badgers, have two games in hand. Making those games count is crucial if the Marauders want to slip into the postseason.
Two tough tests lie ahead, but so too do two chances for revenge. Laurier and York both boast just one loss this season, and sit third and second respectively in the OUA West standings, having handed McMaster losses earlier this year. The task falls to the remaining Marauders to grind out points against those dangerous opponents.
If McMaster needed any further motivation, Sunday will also mark Seniors' Day for the program, as the Marauders bid a home farewell to their graduating veterans.
Meanwhile, the Marauder men sit two points clear of the Guelph Gryphons for second in the OUA West, and will look to maintain their hold on that first-round playoff bye with a strong showing at home.
A win on Saturday would see McMaster sweep the season series with Laurier, having topped the Golden Hawks 2-0 in Waterloo in September. Their visitors will be motivated to improve, as they currently sit sixth and in possession of the division's final playoff place.
The marquee matchup, however, falls on Sunday, when the Marauders renew their rivalry with the York Lions. McMaster remains the only team to take a point from CIS no. 2-ranked York, having battled the Lions to a scoreless draw in Toronto in their very first fixture of the season.
Catching the Lions for top spot in the division is almost certainly out of the question, but a win on Sunday would be a powerful statement from the Marauders with the playoffs looming.
The business end of the season is upon them, and the Marauders take to Ron Joyce Stadium to see out the next chapter this weekend. McMaster and Laurier battle at 1:00 and 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, with York following suit on Sunday.
