Box Score McMaster completed its third consecutive sweep on Saturday, this one coming at the expense of the Toronto Varsity Blues.
The Blues threatened to extend the night in the second set, but ultimately fell 25-18, 25-22 and 25-19 to the Marauders. That result moved McMaster to 3-1 on the season, while Toronto opened their campaign 0-1.
Danny Demyanenko was the Marauders most efficient and prolific hitter on Saturday, converting 11 of 13 attempts and adding three blocks for a game-high 14 points. A trio of outside hitters, Jayson McCarthy, Brandon Koppers and Jori Mantha reached double digit point totals, posting 13.5, 12.5 and 10 respectively.
The two teams opened Saturday's match strongly, both hitting crisply and spreading the ball well. McMaster hit .429 as a team in the first set, converting 16 of 28 hitting attempts versus just four errors, while Toronto hit .333.
After seeing out the first fairly cleanly, the Marauders hit an early snag in the second, as a combination of bad luck on the hosts' part and efficient play by the visitors propelled the Varsity Blues into a lead.
They looked to be on their way to levelling the match at a set apiece, and led 21-18 in the late stages, before the bottom fell out of their game. A series of loose passes made for quick work for the Marauders, and they sped past the Blues to snatch the second set away.
Having taken the two-set lead, McMaster established control early in the third, and led by as many as seven points before the technical timeout. The Blues would narrow that gap as the set progressed, but McMaster's versatile attack kept them ahead throughout.
After opening their season with four consecutive home matches, the Marauders will embark on their first road trip of the campaign when they travel to Toronto to take on the York Lions on Friday.
