Two traditional powerhouses of the OUA's Russell Division met Saturday, September 6
th in Kingston. McMaster suffered a disappointing 33-21 loss, but admirably fought to the final whistle.
Head Coach Cam Mitchell was very pleased with the team's performance despite the loss. He commended the team on their aggressive, organized rucking and well spread defense. Mitchell also recognized the two first-year students who made their OUA debut for the Marauders,
Saffara Whiteley-Hoffelner and
Colleen Irowa.
McMaster had trouble organizing its offensive effort due to a formidable Queen's scrum. But thanks to a cohesive, team effort under the direction of captain Cindy Nelles, McMaster was able to draw within seven points near the end of the game before the Gaels orchestrated a final push.
The Marauders recorded four tries in the game, including two scores late in the second half that served as a late comeback attempt. Nelles,
Sarah Farquharson and
Stephanie Black each scored a try on the afternoon. Black also successfully kicked all three converts for a total of 11 points.
McMaster's next game comes on September 15th, when they play host to the Trent Excalibur at McMaster's Field F at 12:00 p.m.
