MEN’S SOCCER TEAM LOSES HEARTBREAKER ON LATE PENALTY

Playing on a slick field at Ron Joyce Stadium, the McMaster men's soccer team dropped its OUA opener 1-0 to the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks.

The Marauders carried the play for most of the first-half, but it was Mac keeper Angelo Cavalluzzo who came up with a dazzling save to keep his team from falling behind. Cavalluzzo dove to his right and stole a goal from the foot of a Laurier shooter.

Laurier was content to fill up the box, pressure McMaster and then counter-attack, allowing the Marauders to control possession but getting few good scoring opportunities.

Mac's Marco Gennaccaro made a great run down the left side late in the match, but was thwarted by Laurier's Brett Harrington. Gennaccaro was able to flick the rebound across the open Laurier goal, but no Mac shooter was in position for the tap in.

With the game scoreless after 90 minutes, it was Golden Hawk Matthew Maughn who made a dangerous charge toward the McMaster net, getting taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick in extra time. With only seconds remaining, Maughn was able to beat Cavalluzzo from the spot to steal the win.

McMaster will try to regroup when it travels to Guelph on Sunday, September 1st for a 3:15 p.m. match-up with the Gryphons.
