McMaster drew one of the country's best teams into unfamiliar territory on Saturday: a defensive battle. The Marauder women's rugby team held the CIS no. 2-ranked Guelph Gryphons to a season-low of 20 points, but could not get on the board themselves in losing their OUA semifinal match 20-0.
Gryphon Shannon Spurrell led the match with 15 points, as Guelph moved into the OUA final where the defending champions will take on the Queen's Gaels. McMaster, meanwhile, was relegated to the bronze-medal match, which the Marauders will host against the Western Mustangs on Saturday, October 26.
Guelph built a 12-point lead in the opening half, on the strength on a try from Daria Keane and five points from Spurrell on two converts and a penalty goal. The Marauders largely held the CIS no. 1 seed in check in the second half, conceding only eight more points on the afternoon.
