Hamilton, Ont. - The McMaster Marauders men's lacrosse team scored seven goals in the second quarter to take down the Toronto Varsity Blues at Alumni Field on Sunday afternoon. In the 14-7 win, Taylor Dredge (Milton, Ont.), Carter Williams (Scottsdale, AZ) and Tristan Schram (Hamilton, Ont.) would score hat tricks.
The first quarter had McMaster get on the board first with a goal from Williams in the opening minutes, but Toronto would respond with three of their own. Two came within two minutes of each other from Jeremey Hayton (Stratford, Ont.) and Michael Buwalda (Toronto). The last of the quarter would come from Toronto's Ryan Paris with five minutes left.
The Marauders really handed it to the Blues in the second, scoring six unanswered goals. Schram and Mark Phillips (Alma, Ont.) would get two each in the opening ten minutes. At the six minute mark, Williams would find the back of the net for his second of the game. With less than three minutes to go in the half, Dredge would score his first, Toronto's Jordan Robertson (Toronto) would score off a timeout, and Williams would connect for his third to give McMaster the 8-4 lead.
The first ten minutes of the third would go scoreless as both teams ramped up on defence. It would take until the nine minute mark for Toronto's Corey Wright (Newmarket, Ont.) to give the Blues their first goal of the half. Just a minute later, teammate Justin Crofts (Toronto) would net his only goal of the game to get the Blues within two. Before the third quarter was up, Schram would score his third before suffering an injury to give McMaster a three goal cushion heading into the last quarter.
In the last 20 minutes of the game, McMaster unleashed on offence with another five unanswered goals. Dredge would score two within four minutes, Jamie Batten (Bolton, Ont.) would get one with four minutes to go, and Ryan Adams (Oakville, Ont.) and Alex Goacher (Oshawa, Ont.) would get one each to finish off the scoring for McMaster. Wright would get one more for Toronto before the end of the game.
This marks McMaster's first win of the season. They look to continue the win streak as they take on Guelph at home on Wednesday night.
