OUA WEST MEN'S SOCCER ALL-STAR TEAM BOASTS FIVE MARAUDERS

Hamilton, Ont. - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to announce the all-stars and major award winners for the men’s soccer west division. The No. 1 York Lions received nine awards, while the McMaster Marauders received five honours.

The McMaster Marauders, who finished the season second in the west with a 12-1-3 record, have five all-stars on their roster. Fourth-year striker Mark Reilly (Hamilton, Ont.) finished third in scoring with 13 goals, en route to being named a first team all-star for the first time in his career, after making the second team last season. Other Marauders picking up first team honours are midfielder Ryan Garnett (Kitchener, Ont.) and defender Andrew Pastoric (Oakville, Ont.). Keeper Angelo Cavalluzzo (Hamilton, Ont.) and defender Garrett McConville (Ottawa) were named to the second team. With the award, McConville becomes a three-time all-star after first team status last year and a second team award in 2009.

York’s fifth-year striker Adrian Pena (Woodbridge, Ont.) has been named the west division most valuable player for the second time in his career, after taking home the honour in 2010. Pena notched 17 goals this season to finish tied atop the OUA, and used his experience and leadership to guide the Lions to a 14-0-2 regular season record and the top ranking in the nation. For his efforts, Pena was also named a west division first team all-star for the fourth time.

The west division rookie of the year award, presented by Big Kahuna Sport Company, goes to York’sMark-Anthony Kaye (Toronto). The midfielder finished in a tie for seventh in OUA scoring with seven goals. Kaye’s season included a hat trick against the Guelph Gryphons which helped earn him Pioneer Energy OUA male athlete of the week honours for the period ending September 16th, 2012.

For the second time in three seasons, York’s Carmine Isacco has been named the west division coach of the year. The 2012 honour is the third for Isacco after winning in 2007 and 2010. Isacco guided the Lions to an undefeated season and was just two draws away from a perfect campaign.  2012 marks the first time the Lions have gone undefeated under Isacco who took over the program in 2007.

York Lions joining Pena as first team all-stars include goalkeeper Sotiri Varlokostas (Toronto), defender Branko Majstorovic (Mississauga, Ont.) and midfielders Charlie Trafford (Calgary, Alta.) andArthur Casupanan (Niagara Falls, Ont.). The first team nod is the first for all four players, though Varlokostas and Trafford were named second team all-stars last season.

The Guelph Gryphons brother duo of Brenden and Justin Springer of Burlington, Ont. has been named west division first team all-stars. The award is the first for both fourth-year midfielder Brenden and rookie defender Justin. First-year striker Jared Agyemang (Brampton, Ont.) was named to the second team, after notching seven goals to lead the Gryphs.

Western defenders Dominic Bell (Waterloo, Ont.) and Andrew Walton (Toronto), along with midfielderEric Amato (Toronto) have been named west division all-stars. Bell was named to the first team for the second consecutive season. Walton and Amato were given second team honours.

The Windsor Lancers boast two all-stars as fifth-year midfielder Michael Watson (Windsor, Ont.) and fourth-year defender Massimo Megna (Calgary, Alta.) join the second team ranks. Watson becomes a three-time all-star after first team honours in 2009 and a second team nod in 2010.

Defender Aldo Maiorano (Whitby, Ont.) and striker Justin Gordon (Pickering, Ont.) of the UOIT Ridgebacks were also named the west division second team, marking the first time in program history that the Ridgebacks have had two players named all-stars.

The Brock Badgers and Laurier Golden Hawks each had one player named a second team all-star. Brock’s Sammy Orlando (Woodbridge, Ont.) and Laurier’s Donald Chmura (Waterloo, Ont.) both got the nod as midfielders for the first time.
