Guelph, Ont. - The McMaster Marauders' defence set the tone Sunday afternoon as the Marauders defeated the Guelph Gryphons 20-11 at Alumni Stadium to improve to 2-0 on the 2026 OUA football season.
McMaster held Guelph to 11 points while receiving contributions from all three phases, highlighted by six sacks from the defence, including three from Ryan Broome (Hamilton, Ont.), and nine points off the foot of Michael Horvat (Hamilton, Ont.).
For head coach Stefan Ptaszek, the game plan was simple: make every offensive possession end with a kick and let the Marauders' defence dictate the game.
"One of the things we thought we needed to do was every offensive drive needs to end with a kick," said Ptaszek. "Even if it's all punts, we feel like our defence is one of the best in the country."
McMaster opened the scoring 4:20 into the game when the Marauder defence recorded a safety.
The offence then extended the lead early in the second quarter.
Quarterback Lucas Barresi (Hamilton, Ont.), who suffered an ankle injury in the fourth quarter of McMaster's season opener, capped a four-play, five-yard drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown. Horvat added the convert to put the Marauders ahead 9-0.
Guelph answered with an 80-yard touchdown pass from Tristan Aboud to Ethan Garwe, but Horvat added a rouge later in the quarter to give McMaster a 10-7 lead heading into halftime.
The Gryphons took their first lead of the afternoon in the third quarter, adding a rouge before Trey Thompson connected on a 42-yard field goal to put Guelph ahead 11-10.
McMaster responded with its longest scoring drive of the afternoon.
The Marauders marched 75 yards on seven plays, with Micah DuChene (Hamilton, Ont.) finding the end zone from two yards out to give McMaster a 16-11 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
From there, the Marauder defence took control.
Broome recorded three sacks, while Christian Chukwuali II (Hamilton, Ont.) added two and
Domenic Limanni (Hamilton, Ont.) recorded half a sack as McMaster consistently pressured the Gryphons.
The Marauders also forced two Guelph fumbles and intercepted one pass, while holding the Gryphons to just 12 first downs.
"I think our defence, first of all, played amazing," said Broome. "We had a good game plan coming into it, and just trust overall. We have trust in each other to do their assignment. That allows us to play free, get home, get sacks and win games on defence."
Ptaszek was particularly impressed with the defensive performance, crediting his defensive line for setting the tone throughout the afternoon.
"I don't know that I've seen my D-line get after a quarterback quite like that ever," said Ptaszek. "They attacked."
The Marauders' special teams played a key role in the fourth quarter.
Horvat recorded another rouge with 9:31 remaining before connecting on a 26-yard field goal with just 22 seconds left to seal the victory.
The fifth-year kicker finished with nine points while also punting 13 times for 524 yards, averaging 40.3 yards per punt with four punts inside the Guelph 20-yard line.
For Barresi, Sunday's victory was a complete team effort after a week focused on managing the ankle injury he suffered in McMaster's season opener.
"Everything I did this week, I was just thinking about nurturing and quarterbacking this injury," said Barresi. "They took time out of their day and energy into me, so I can't thank those guys enough."
The Marauders also received contributions through the air from Shane Wismer (Stoney Creek, Ont.), who led the team with seven receptions for 62 yards.
Nathan Denkers (Hamilton, Ont.) added five catches for 66 yards, while
Mazin Cukic (Hamilton, Ont.) recorded four receptions for 52 yards.
Barresi said McMaster's daily competition between its offence and defence helped prepare the team for Sunday's defensive battle.
"Iron sharpens iron," said Barresi. "We go against those guys every single day throughout the year. So honestly, it makes us better and we make them better."
The Marauders now turn their attention to another road test next Saturday.
McMaster will travel to Toronto to face the York Lions on September 12 at 1 p.m. The Lions defeated the Marauders last season, giving McMaster another opportunity to build on its perfect start.
"They beat us last year," said Ptaszek. "We're on the road. Road wins in this league are hard to come by. We got at least one. We'd like to get two on the road at least."
With the win, McMaster improves to 2-0 on the season.
