McMaster swimming shows resilience at 2025 U SPORTS Championships

TORONTO, Ont. – The McMaster Marauders swimming team travelled to Varsity Pool from March 6-8 for the 2025 U SPORTS Swimming Championships.

Competing against schools from across the country, the Marauders fought hard and gave it their all. The women's team finished in 10th place, while the men's team placed 13th.

Women's Results
Day 1: Thursday, March 6th

The Marauders women's team competed in five events on day one. Sara Gray (Kelowna, B.C.) was the first Marauder to compete in the finals of the Women's 100 Breaststroke. After a tough battle, she placed 21st with a final time of 1:12.40. Michelle Wang (Port Elgin, Ont.) and Mikaela Blake (Uxbridge, Ont.) both competed in the Women's 100 Butterfly, finishing in 10th and 22nd, respectively. Wang also competed in two other events on Thursday, one of which was the Women's 50 Backstroke, where she scored 14 points for the team. Later, she joined Shaunna Walker-Dejong (Victoria, B.C.), Blake, and Naeva Scott-Bouris (Victoria, B.C.) in the 4x100 Freestyle Relay, where the team finished 7th. After day one, the Marauders were in 9th place.

Day 2: Friday, March 7th

On day two, the women's team competed in five more events. Wang had a standout swim in the Women's 50 Butterfly, finishing in 6th place with a time of 27.48, one of the best Marauder finishes of the day. The final event for the women's team was the 4x200 Freestyle Relay, where the Marauders finished 12th. After day two, the team moved up to 7th place with 163.5 points.

Day 3: Saturday, March 8th

While day three of the competition did not yield any medal results, the Marauders showed perseverance and determination throughout the day. The best finishes of the day came from Scott-Bouris, who finished 18th in the Women's 800 Freestyle with a final time of 9:07.65, and the Women's 400 Medley Relay, where the Marauders finished 10th.

Men's Results
Day 1: Thursday, March 6th

On day one of the competition, the men's swimming team competed in three events. Emilio Gonzalez Maciel (Estado De Mexico, Mex.) had a strong swim in the Men's 200 Freestyle, finishing 19th with a time of 1:50.16. Hayden Yeung (Hong Kong, CHINA.) added 11 points to the Marauder standings with his 16th-place finish in the Men's 100 Breaststroke. The day concluded with the 400 Freestyle Relay, where the Marauders placed 10th, ending the day in 12th place.

Day 2: Friday, March 7th

On day two, the Marauders continued to perform consistently from preliminaries to finals. Brian Dietz (Etobicoke, Ont.) swam in the Men's 400 Freestyle, placing 19th with a time of 3:57.60, an improvement from his prelim time. Preston McMann (Ottawa, Ont.), Sam Chisholm (Thunder Bay, Ont.), Dietz, and Gonzalez Maciel then competed in the Men's 800 Freestyle Relay, finishing 10th to close the day.

Day 3: Saturday, March 8th

On the final day of the championship, the Marauders were determined to finish strong. Yeung contributed 14 points to the Marauder total with a 13th-place finish in the Men's 50 Breaststroke. Gonzalez Maciel added another 20 points with a 9th-place finish in the Men's 200 Backstroke. Although the Marauders fell short of their desired times in some events, they maintained a focused mindset throughout the competition.

Congratulations to the Marauders for all their hard work in wrapping up their season.
