Bronze for men’s and women’s swim teams at OUA Championships, Wang takes an individual gold

MARKHAM, Ont. — McMaster came back with some hardware after hosting the three day OUA Swimming Championships at the Pan Am Centre in Markham.

17 McMaster swimmers qualified for U SPORTS.

On day one, McMaster had some success in the relays. The men's 4x100 relay got the silver medal and in the women's 4x50m freestyle they took home the bronze. Hayden Yeung (Hong Kong, CHINA) was the lone individual medalist from day 1, securing the bronze medal in the men's 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:02.17. The Marauders would wrap up day one with the women's team in third with 193 points and the men in fourth with 170.5 points.

On day two, the Marauders added two individual medals to their collection. Graduating athlete, Shaunna Walker-de Jong (Cambridge, Ont.) stole the bronze with a time of 25.89 in the women's 50m freestyle, and Michelle Wang (Port Elgin, Ont.) came up big to score the gold medal in the women's 50m butterfly, finishing a mere three hundredths of a second off of the OUA record. McMaster would end day two in a podium spot for both the men's and women's team scores.

Day three proved to be McMaster's largest medal collection day. The women's 4x50m medley relay started the medal rounds off with a silver. Then the Marauders would add two more individual bronze medals from Emilio Gonzalez Maciel (Estada De Mexico, Mex.) in the men's 200m backstroke, with a U SPORTS qualifying time of 1:59.70 and Brian Dietz (Etobicoke, Ont.) in the men's 1500m freestyle, with a time of 15:50.14. Lastly, it would be the women's 4x100m freestyle who would take the final medal of the championships, adding a bronze to the total medal count.

The team score would prove tight on the men's side, but the Marauders would secure the bronze over Waterloo by half a point and the women would also take the team bronze.

Women's coach Grey Fairley would take home the coach of the year award. The Toronto Varsity Blues would grab both the men's and women's banners for an eleventh straight year.
