McMaster squash teams end OUA Championships with mixed results

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont. – The McMaster Marauders men's and women's squash teams faced a challenging series of matches at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championships this weekend, hosted by Brock University at the White Oaks Conference Resort and Spa. Despite some strong individual performances, both teams walked away with mixed results, with the men finishing in seventh place and the women securing fifth.

On Friday, the men's team competed in their first match against the Brock Badgers and fell short 6-1. Marauder Rawaad Mir (Mississauga, Ont.) played a good match and went on to earn the team's single point. The Marauders went on to face the Western Mustangs, but unfortunately lost the match 7-0.

The women's team also had a tough start to their tournament with a 6-1 loss against the Queen's Gaels. Terra Poon Tip (Toronto, Ont.) played a strong 3-0 match which led to McMaster's only win. The Marauders then faced Toronto in their second match of the day but were unable to hold them off. They lost the match 7-0.

On Saturday the men's team continued to fall short with a 7-0 loss against the Waterloo Warriors and a 7-0 loss against the Guelph Gryphons. Mir and Matthew Olejarz (Richmond Hill, Ont.) gave their opponents a push, but they were unable to hold them off.

The women's team, however, turned things around with an impressive 5-0 sweep over the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees. The Marauders dominated the match, securing a strong win to get their tournament back on track.

On Sunday the men's team played the Brock Badgers for the final time and walked away with a 6-1 loss, securing the seventh-place finish in the championships.

The women's team also faced the Badgers in the fifth-place match. The Marauders took 4-3 victory, securing fifth-place finish overall. Additionally, McMaster's Sofia Quon (Victoria, B.C.) was recognized for her exceptional performance throughout the weekend, earning a Women's All-Stars award.
