The McMaster Marauders women's and men's squash teams earned sixth and seventh place, respectively, at the OUA Championship this past weekend.
Â
Claiming men's gold this year for the 38
th time in a row were the Western Mustangs, while the Queen's Gaels took home the women's gold for the 7
th consecutive season.
Â
The Marauder's women's team went 0-3 in preliminary competition after facing some tough teams, but came away from the three matches with six sets won.
Â
Their first matchup of the tournament was a face-off against the reigning bronze medalists, the Western Mustangs. Though the Marauders didn't win the 6-1 match, Thalia Waite earned McMaster's first win of the Championship, defeating Western's Kali MacLean 3-1.
Â
McMaster went into the second day of competition with an early match against the 2020 silver medalists, the Waterloo Warriors. They improved on their first match results, taking two sets from the Warriors in the 5-2 game. McMaster's Ella Brown pushed her match to five sets, winning 3-2 in the end, while Terra Poon Tip earned a 3-1 victory for her team.
Â
Refining their game throughout the tournament, the Marauders continued to improve on their score with each set played. In their third and final match of the round robin, McMaster tested the Guelph Gryphons, with three victories in a row from Waite, Brown, and Poon Tip. However, Guelph came away with a 4-3 win overall.
Â
The Marauders took on the host Brock Badgers in their first consolation game in Sunday's final and blew away their competition with a 7-0 sweep, McMaster's first win of the tournament for both the women and the men.
Â
To determine the fifth and sixth overall finishes, McMaster faced Guelph again but the rematch had a similar outcome to their first outing against the Gryphons. Though Waite, Brown, and Poon Tip earned victories for McMaster once again, Guelph ultimately took the match 4-3.
Â
The Marauders men's team had a tough start to the tournament, falling 7-0 to the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday in their first match of the Championship. They came back to the courts on Saturday with perseverance, and although they faced another scoreless match against last season's silver medalists, the Waterloo Warriors, they had determination in their last preliminary match against the Brock Badgers.
Â
Kristopher Sanderson came through for the Marauders, sweeping his set against the host school's Georgio Loannou. With the victory, Sanderson put the first point on the board for the men's team.
Â
The Marauders then moved onto Sunday to face the Queen's Gaels in the consolation semi, but fell 7-0 to end their time at the Championship.
