Marauder Giving Challenge set for Oct. 21 in fifth year supporting student-athlete development

HAMILTON – Following a record-breaking fundraising campaign that raised $149,488 from more than 1,000 donors last year, McMaster Athletics & Recreation has announced the return of the Marauder Giving Challenge. The 2025 edition will take place Tuesday, Oct. 21.

With the excitement of a new season in full swing, McMaster student-athletes are preparing for one of the most anticipated days of the year, in which supporters can make a direct impact on the sports of their choosing.

Each team participating in the Marauder Giving Challenge has outlined a unique case for support, detailing specific goals and how financial contributions will make a tangible impact for their program. These cases provide insight into each program's needs — from enhancing training resources and equipment to supporting off-season development and leadership initiatives. Supporters can explore these team cases on the donation platform to see firsthand how their contributions will help student-athletes thrive.

Contributions can be made today through Oct. 21 at marauders.ca/giving.

"Now entering its fifth year, the Marauder Giving Challenge has become more than a fundraising campaign; it's a reflection of what makes McMaster special," said Keenan Jeppsen, Director of Athletics & Recreation.

"Thanks to the generosity of our community, we've been able to strengthen the everyday experience for Marauders — from access to enhanced training resources and travel opportunities, to supports that extend far beyond competition like mental health, nutrition, and academic advising," Jeppesen added. "Continued support will allow us to grow those resources even further, ensuring every student-athlete has the opportunity to reach their full potential both on and off the field."

In 2025, the Marauder Giving Challenge introduces a new set of dynamic team-based challenges, adding incentives for the McMaster community to rally around their favourite teams and unlock bonus funding:
  • Early Bird (by 7:00 a.m.) – Every team with a qualifying gift before 7:00 a.m. earns a bonus
  • Warm-Up (7:00–9:00 a.m.) – The team with the most unique donors during this period wins a prize
  • Half-Time (12:00–1:00 p.m.) – Midday momentum matters; the team with the most unique donors wins
  • Dr. Wood Student Scramble (1:00–2:00 p.m.) – The team with the most gifts from current students earns a bonus from Dr. Phil Wood, former Dean of Students and lifelong Marauder fan (minimum $5 gift)
  • Last Shift (7:00–8:00 p.m.) – The team with the most gifts during this hour claims the final time-slot prize
  • Overtime – The final qualifying donation of $100+ before 11:59 p.m. wins this special prize
  • OUA Team Challenge – Every OUA-tier team that raises at least $1,000 will receive a departmental bonus
  • Hidden Gems – Special tickets will be hidden around campus; find one and choose where the $500 prize goes
  • Rookie Challenge – Celebrate fresh support! The top three teams with the most first-time donors win tiered prizes
  • Fill the Stands Challenge – Recognizing the teams with the strongest donor base and most total donors
  • Director's Challenge – Visit the Marauder Challenge Headquarters in DBAC and place your vote; the two teams with the most in-person votes win
That impact is felt directly by the student-athletes who benefit from donor generosity every day.

"Being part of McMaster Wrestling has given me a second family and a place to grow both as an athlete and as a person," said Macy Malysiak, a standout McMaster wrestler. "Thanks to donor support, we're able to chase big goals, train at the highest level, and learn from incredible coaches while proudly representing our school. I'm truly grateful for the opportunities your generosity makes possible. Thank you for believing in us."

"The contributions from alumni, fans and community members have helped the water polo team compete and grow at the highest level possible while giving each team member equal opportunity regardless of their circumstances," said Henrik Hodgson, a student-athlete on the men's water polo team. "Donors have helped us to set higher standards for our team while ensuring each player feels a sense of belonging in our community. To all who have contributed and who continue to contribute to the McMaster water polo team, we are forever grateful for your support."

In previous seasons, contributions from the challenge have allowed McMaster student-athletes to strive for their full potential. With the help of their supporters, they gain access to opportunities that may have otherwise been beyond reach.

As the 2025 Marauder Giving Challenge approaches, McMaster Athletics & Recreation invites alumni, friends and supporters to help make a difference in the McMaster Marauders community. Every contribution will facilitate growth, unlock opportunities, and contribute to the ongoing success of McMaster's student-athletes.
