NATIONAL PREVIEW: Going for gold in Guelph - What to know for the U SPORTS Wrestling Championships

HAMILTON, Ont. - After earning the provincial silver medal in both the women's and men's competitions at the OUA Championships in February, the Marauders will now compete against the top wrestlers from across the nation at the final varsity wrestling event of the season - the U SPORTS Wrestling Championships.

The Marauders will be joined by teams from across U SPORTS including the Guelph Gryphons, Western Mustangs, Brock Badgers, Toronto Varsity Blues, Lakehead Thunderwolves, TMU Bold, Concordia Stingers, Lethbridge Pronghorns, Saskatchewan Huskies, Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas. The Badgers men's team topped the podium last season while the Alberta Pandas earned national gold on the women's side. Both teams will hope to repeat in 2024. McMaster will compete in preliminary matches on Saturday morning with medal matches set for Saturday afternoon.

Both McMaster squads have been dominant on the provincial stage in recent years and are serious medal contenders at this year's U SPORTS Championships.

2024 U SPORTS Wrestling Championships Details
  • Within each weight class, the top three finishers from Canada West, the top three finishers from the OUA, as well as the top two finishers from the Atlantic/Quebec competition qualify for the U SPORTS Championships.
  • Competitors are not allowed to move up or down from the weight class submitted to U SPORTS from the Conference Championships, notwithstanding the substitution policy.
  • For determining team standings and conference standings at the U SPORTS Championships, the scoring will be:
    • 1st place - 10 points
    • 2nd place - 8 points
    • 3rd place - 6 points
    • 4th place - 5 points
    • 5th place - 4 points
    • 6th place - 3 points
    • 7th place - 2 points
    • 8th place - 1 point
  • To ensure that there are 8 wrestlers in each weight class, if any conference is unable to fill their allotted entries, vacant spots will be filled by the remaining two conferences.

  • Defending OUA gold medalist in 53kg class
  • 2023 U SPORTS silver medalist
  • Undefeated in varsity competition this season

Gregor McNeil, 2nd Year (Elig.), North York, Ont.
  • 2024 OUA gold medalist in 68kg class
  • Will compete at his first-ever U SPORTS Championship
  • Has not lost since returning from last year's season-ending injury
