Marauders remain undefeated after weekend series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HAMILTON, Ont. — The McMaster Marauder's women's team (6-0) remained undefeated after their weekend series vs the Guelph Gryphons (0-6).

Match 1 vs Guelph

The Marauders got off to a hot start in set one of Friday's match. The Marauders took a 5-1 lead highlighted by two kills by fourth-year athlete, Sullie Sundara (Kanata, Ont.) and a service ace by Ava Connelly (Ancaster, Ont.). The Gryphons came back and the set was tight. Second-year, Olivia Julien (Toronto, Ont.) recorded a service ace and Sundara added another successful attack. Four straight errors by Guelph placed McMaster in a comfortable position up by four. Sundara and fifth-year athlete, Emma McKinnon (Milton, Ont.) both complete successful attacks. Sundara recorded a service ace and Chayse Victoria (Oakville, Ont.) assisted Connelly's kill as McMaster led by five. After Julien extended the maroon's lead, the Gryphons scored seven straight points, taking over the lead. McKinnon scored back and the game was tied at 23. Sundara scored two straight Marauder points, but the set remained tied. Olivia added a kill and service ace before Victoria set up McKinnon with a great backwards pass for the set winner. The Marauders take set one, 31-29.
 
McKinnon's kill earned McMaster a 5-2 lead. The Gryphons scored on five out of seven points and the score was tied at 7. Julien made a beautiful tip play that fooled the Gryphons defense. Abby Delamere (Toronto, Ont.) and Connelly contributed kills and Victoria had a massive block. The Marauders held an 18-15 lead. Kills by Sundara, Delamere and Connelly earned McMaster the set win as the Marauders pulled away from Guelph, 25-19.
 
The Marauders had a dominant third set. Sundara capitalized on three plays and the Marauders were up by five. McKinnon had a soft touch on a play that evaded Guelph defenders. Sundara had a spike and a block late while McKinnon hammered home a kill as McMaster earned a 25-12 win.
 
The Marauders improved to 5-0 with a solid victory on Friday's match.
 
Match 2 vs Guelph

Olivia Julien's (Toronto, Ont.) service ace and Sullie Sundara's (Kanata, Ont.) block earned the Marauders a 4-0 lead. Another kill by Sundara and the Marauders were up 7-2.  After the teams traded scores, Julien scored a successful attack. Each team went on a run and the Marauders were up 15-10.  The Gryphons went on a run and Sundara ended a four-point streak for the Gryphons that brought the set to even at 19. Despite two kills from Julien, the Marauders would fall 25-23 in set one.
 
The second set was even early as the teams were tied at 5. The Marauders went on a seven-point run highlighted by scores from Julien and Chayse Victoria (Oakville, Ont.). The Maroon held a 13-7 lead. Julien completed another successful attack, and the Marauders were up by four. Angelika Vidmar (Etobicoke, Ont.) performed a dominant attack, and the Marauders won the set 25-22 after Sundara and McKinnon's kills.
 
Julien continued her strong play as she scored twice to open up the third set. The set was tied 4-4 and it continued to be back-and-forth. The Marauders scored points on five straight kills and the set was tied at 14. Victoria and Sundara both added two successful attacks and McMaster earned the 25-17 set win.
 
The Gryphons were hot to start as they earned an 11-2 lead. The Marauders battled back with a 14-5 run highlighted by two service aces from McKinnon and two scores by Sundara. Payton Entwistle performed a big block and Vidmar had a successful attack enroute to the comeback. Back-to-back monster kills by McKinnon and Julien put McMaster out front. The Marauders would fall short in the set as Guelph scored seven out of the next ten points, picking up the 25-21 win.
 
Abby Delamere's (Toronto, Ont.) kill put McMaster up 4-1. Guelph answered back with four straight points. McKinnon scores four of the next seven points and McMaster held a 9-6 lead. Guelph went on an 8-2 run and were at match point. Clutch plays from Victoria, Delamere and Sundara put the Marauders at match point. The Gryphons made a service error and the Marauders completed the comeback remaining undefeated.
 
Next up, the Marauders face off against the Western Mustangs (4-0) as they visit London in a weekend series.
