Marauders close out invitational season in London

LONDON, Ont. - With the 2024 OUA Wrestling Championships just two weeks away, the McMaster wrestling team showcased closed out the invitational season with a stellar performance over the weekend. The team's preparation and dedication were on show as they secured five first-place finishes and clinched three additional medals, setting the stage for what will be a competitive provincial championship.

The weekend kicked off with the Marauders displaying exceptional skill at the Ontario Junior Open on Saturday. The team's relentless effort resulted in several standout performances.

Four wrestlers - Blayne Helou, Irman Kang, Karanveer Mahil and Mayumi King - stood atop the podium, seizing the gold in their respective weight classes. Their victories not only added crucial points to the team's overall score but also served as a testament to their individual commitment and training.

Blayne Helou, a second year Mechanical Engineering & Management student, picked up a semifinal win by technical fall over a Guelph wrestler and then defeated his teammate Adrian Winter in the first place match, to secure the gold medal in the 61kg class. A Caledon local, Irman Kang continued his impressive season with another gold medal performance. He picked up a 10-0 technical fall victory over a wrestler from GTA Alliance and secured top spot in the 86kg class after his opponent in the gold medal match forfeited. Karanveer Mahil picked up four straight wins over his competitors - two by technical fall, one by fall and one by decision - en route to the 125kg gold medal. A first year wrestler, Mayumi King secured her first top finish as a Marauder in the 57kg class.

In addition to the first-place finishes, three Marauders - Adrian Winter, Tehani Blais and Anna Gick - secured silver or bronze medals, showcasing the depth and talent within the team. These additional victories contributed valuable points towards the team's 2nd place overall standing.

On Sunday, some McMaster wrestlers competed at the Western Open, led by Peter Shirley. The 2022 OUA Most Outstanding Male Wrestler earned a quarterfinal technical fall win over a member of the TMU Bold before winning his semifinal match by technical fall over a Western Mustang. In the gold medal match, Shirley earned a decisive 15-5 technical fall victory over his competitor to pick up top spot in the 100kg class.
