Men's soccer earns first win of 2023, defeats Warriors

HAMILTON - Marauders men's soccer defeated the Waterloo Warriors 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Ron Joyce Stadium to earn the first points of the season on opening weekend. With the win, the Marauders move to a 1-1-0 record. Amir Shirazi scored both goals for the Marauders while Ethan Cagalj recorded three saves in the victory.

The first half saw chances from both sides with both teams coming close on a few different occasions but neither side was able to break through. At the halftime break, the Marauders held a 7-6 lead in shots.

McMaster jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 68th minute. The Marauders were awarded a penalty kick and Shirazi stepped up to the spot, making no mistake to open the game's scoring. The lead didn't last long as Waterloo drew even just two minutes later. For the second time in the contest, the home squad was awarded a PK in the 89th minute and, once again, Shirazi fired it past the goalkeeper to record the game winner and secure the first win of the 2023 season.

The Marauders finished the game with 13 shots, nine on target, compared to 11 shots, four on target for the Warriors.
