HAMILTON, Ont. – The McMaster Marauders hosted the annual Student-Athlete Award Show on Tuesday night in Burridge Gymnasium. The night served as a celebration of athletic success over the 2022-23 season, for the individual student-athletes, coaches and teams that make up Marauders Athletics.
Max Turek of the McMaster Marauders cross country team and
Sarah Gates of the women's basketball team took home top honours as the Athletes of the Year at Tuesday night's Award Show.
In his final varsity season,
Max Turek closes out his career as a Marauder with Ivor Wynne Male Athlete of the Year honours. The 2022 U SPORTS Male Cross Country Athlete of the Year won every single varsity race he competed in this season. Not only was he the OUA Champion but he was the first to cross the finish line at the U SPORTS Championship to add individual U SPORTS gold to his resume and as he led the Marauders to their first national title since 1963. Outside of McMaster, Max placed third at the National Cross Country Championships and represented the nation at the World Cross Country Championships in Australia.
Sarah Gates adds yet another highlight to her resume to cap off an unbelievable year. The McMaster Marauders women's basketball guard was named the 2022-23 OUA's Most Valuable Player, became just the second ever Marauder to win the Nan Copp Trophy as the U SPORTS Player of the Year and was a First Team All-Canadian and is this year's Thérèse Quigley Female Athlete of the Year. The Newmarket local was the national scoring leader with an average of 27.3 points per game and ranked first in the country in total field goals and made three-pointers. She completed her regular season career as McMaster's all-time leading scorer, with a total of 1,857 points.
The Dr. Ray Johnson Outstanding Male Award and Outstanding Female Graduate Award winners for 2022-23 are Alex Cowman of the rowing team and
Arianne Soriano of the women's basketball team. Both Marauders have exemplified the spirit of McMaster throughout their time as a Marauder, combining service to others and leadership with success in the classroom and athletic excellence.
Wrestling's Karanveer Mahil and Serena Di Benedetto were named this year's Mel & Marilyn Hawkrigg Rookies of the Year. Both Mahil and Di Benedetto were double medalists, landing on the podium at both the OUA and U SPORTS Championships while the latter was also named the U SPORTS Female Rookie of the Year.
This year's winner of the Director's Award is Ligaya Stinellis for her outstanding and significant contributions to the Department of Athletics & Recreation. She is a strong leader within the student-athlete community and constantly gives back to the McMaster Athletics family.
The Bruce Cochrane Award is given annually to the student who best exemplifies unwavering dedication and service to varsity athletics. This year's recipient is Micah Joyce Marcelino, a Student Lead with the Event Staff.
Christina Stratford, this year's U SPORTS Student-Athlete Community Service Award winner was presented with the Les Prince Award as the student-athlete who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and community service.
