McMaster baseball finishes fourth at OUA Championship

HAMILTON - After an impressive run at the OUA West Regional, the McMaster Marauders fell to the Toronto Varsity Blues, the eventual OUA Champions, in the conference semifinal and were edged by the Carleton Ravens in the OUA bronze medal game.

In Friday's semifinal contest, the Toronto Varsity Blues, who last secured the conference banner in 2021, defeated the host McMaster Marauders 6-1.

The Varsity Blues opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st. Sam Aslanowicz singled to get on base and advanced to second on a ground out by Owen Taylor. Aslanowizc stole third and made it home on a sacrifice fly by teammate, Niko Kekatos. The Varsity Blues added two to their lead in the third, with the top of the order performing once again. Aslanowicz scored his second run of the day while Kekatos doubled to bring in Taylor for the score. Kristyan Puyol-Genossar stole home in the bottom of the sixth to make the advantage 4-0 Toronto. Having an impressive first day, Aslanowicz scored his third of the day in the seventh. McMaster got on the board in the 8th with Matt Underwood getting home on a line drive single by Anthony Polowick. The Varsity Blues added one more in the 8th to secure the 6-1 victory. Underwood led the way for the Marauders with two hits while Polowick recorded the team's lone RBI. Marco Dilaudi totaled five strikeouts over his time on the mound.

In the bronze medal game on Saturday morning, the McMaster Marauders faced the Carleton Ravens. It was the host Marauders who opened the scoring with a 2-0 advantage after one. Underwood recorded a ground out to bring Justin Meade in for the score. On the next at bat, Ethan Seymour singled on a hard ground ball to centre field to bring Nicolas Velocci home and double the lead. Carleton recorded two runs of their own to tie things up after four. The Ravens added two more in the top of the fifth but it was the seventh inning where the Ottawa squad showed its dominance. Over the course of the 45 minute inning, Carleton recorded an impressive six runs to cruise to a 10-2 final and the bronze medal. Meade, Underwood, Seymour and Mason Mayea recorded hits for McMaster. Carter Pond, Luis Grisanti, Marcello Colluci and Noah Law all pitched for the Marauders for a combined nine strikeouts.

After returning to the OUA Championship for the first time since 2021, there is no doubt that the Marauders will continue to be a championship contender and will provide McMaster fans with a lot of entertainment in the coming years.
