HAMILTON, Ont. - After a weekend split last weekend, the Marauders men's soccer team looked to secure points in Week 2 against one of the top teams in the province - the Guelph Gryphons.
On Friday night, the Marauders started the weekend with a 1-1 draw but on Sunday, the Gryphons got the better of the Marauders and handed them a 2-0 loss.
Friday September 9 - Guelph, Ont.
On Friday, McMaster started the game quick and found the back of the net just 24 minutes into the contest.
Ed Bryan Florent (Orleans, Ont.) recorded the goal for the Marauders, his first of the season, to give the maroon and grey an early lead. The Marauders outshot the Gryphons 4-3 in the opening 45 minutes of play.
Just after the halftime break, Guelph tied the game at one. Despite a few final opportunities for McMaster in the final two minutes of the contest, the scoreline remained, each team recording a point in the contest.
Jonathan Vaughan (Cobourg, Ont.) picked up the tie in net and recorded five saves in the match-up.
Sunday September 11 - Hamilton, Ont.
Coming off of a tough contest on Friday in which the Marauders earned a key point, McMaster couldn't carry over the momentum into Sunday. The Marauders dominated the first half, more than doubling up on the Gryphons in the shot category - 12-5 - while putting many of those shots on goal. Despite the opportunities, the game remained scoreless into the halftime break.
The game winner for Guelph came in the 47th minute and, 30 minutes later, the Gryphons scored the insurance goal from the penalty spot to put the game away.Â
McMaster and Guelph combined for 26 shots, 19 of which were on target.
Miles Green (Toronto, Ont.) and
Sachin Sargeant (Lynden, Ont.) accounted for eight of the Marauders' attempts at goal. Vaughan was in net for the maroon and grey and recorded six saves.
The Marauders' record moves to 1-2-1 while the Gryphons remain unbeaten at 2-0-1.
