WINDSOR, Ont. - With a tough strength of schedule to open the 2022 OUA season, the McMaster Marauders men's soccer team looked to complete the weekend sweep for the first time this year.
The Windsor Lancers were this weekend's competitor and, despite two very different scorelines, the Marauders came out on top in both contests, earning two wins - 2-1 and and 7-3.
Friday September 16 - Hamilton, Ont.
On Friday, the Marauders got on the scoreboard when
Miles Green (Toronto, Ont.) opened the scoring 21 minutes into the game. The goal marked Green's third tally of the season. Less than ten minutes later, the Lancers tied the game at 1-1. Second half substitute,
Spencer Chapple (Toronto, Ont.), netted the game winning goal for the home team late in the game.
Evan Mitchell (North Vancouver, BC) was credited with the assist.
Despite the close scoreline, McMaster dominated the game with 19 shots to Windsor's eight, with 11 hitting the target. The Marauders were also awarded nine corners throughout the 90 minutes, indicating how much time was spent near the Windsor goal.
Ethan Cagalj (Stoney Creek, Ont.) was in net for the win and recorded five saves. Green was a constant threat to the Lancer defence, accounting for six of the Marauders shots.
Sunday September 18 - Windsor, Ont.
After collecting three points on Friday, the Marauders had the full six points in sight in the second contest of the weekend. This time, the Lancers got on the board just four minutes into the opening half to take an early lead. But
Amir Shirazi (Oakville, Ont.) wouldn't allow that lead to last long. Shirazi netted three goals in 15 minutes, recording the hat trick and giving the maroon and grey a 3-1 advantage at the halftime break. In the second half,
Andrew Kadhe (Vaughan, Ont.) and
Ed Bryan Florent (Orleans, Ont.) each had a pair of goals. Windsor did find the back of the net twice more but the game was out of reach with the Marauders taking the game 7-3, collecting the full three points in the process.
Spencer Chapple,
Damiano Refosco (Hamilton, Ont.) and
Ed Bryan Florent each had an assist in the win.
McMaster and Windsor combined for 29 shots in one of the highest scoring games of the season.
Ed Bryan Florent tallied six shots while
Amir Shirazi recorded three goals on three shots for a perfect goal scoring percentage.
Ethan Cagalj was in net for the maroon and grey.
The Marauders improve to 3-2-1 while the Lancers remain winless at 0-6.
