Marauders drop competitive contest to Gryphons

GUELPH, Ont. - The McMaster Marauders women's basketball team was looking to secure a fifth straight win on Wednesday night, just down Highway 6 in Guelph.

Despite a close contest, in the end, Wednesday's contest went the way of the Gryphons who earned the win with a final score of 82-73.

The Marauders got on the board first with a jumper from Cassie Joli-Coeur (Johnstown, Ont.) but the two teams exchanged baskets throughout the opening quarter with the Marauders holding a narrow 17-12 lead after 10 minutes of play.

Guelph came into the second quarter rolling, outscoring the visitors 25-8 to close out the half, to hold a 45-31 lead at the break.

The Marauders and Gryphons split possession in the third but it was Guelph that extended the lead to 26 points at the mid-way point of the frame to lead 63-49 after 30 minutes of play.

McMaster fought hard in the fourth, outscoring the Gryphons 24-19 in the closing 10 minutes but were unable to close the gap, dropping the contest 82-73.

Amy Stinson (Hamilton, Ont.) led the Marauders' offense with 19 points, six rebounds and three assists while Sarah Gates (Newmarket, Ont.), Jenna Button (Dundas, Ont.) and Cassie Joli-Coeur all scored in double-digits for a combined 39 points.
