HAMILTON, Ont. - The McMaster Marauders men's basketball team secured the second Friday night win of the young 2022-23 season, this time against the TMU Bold with a 75-68 victory.
Mike Demagus (Scarborough, Ont.) led the Marauders with 18 points while
AY Osunde (Scarborough, Ont.) and
Ares Culley-Bremner (Hannon, Ont.) contributed double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Rookie guard, Tyler Garcia (Mississauga, Ont.), had a game for the maroon and grey, with eight assists, five rebounds, two steals and seven points in his 27 minutes on the court.
After last facing one another in 2020, the Marauders and Bold took some time to get reacquainted. TMU scored the opening two baskets of the game to lead 4-0 early in the first quarter but McMaster responded. In a back-and-forth frame, the two squads were tied at 15-15 heading into the quarter break.
McMaster and TMU again equaled one another's offense, scoring a combined 32 points between the two. Although the Marauders went 2-7 from three-point range while the Bold was unable to knock down any shots from outside the arc, both teams entered the halftime break deadlocked at 31 points.
TMU started the third quarter with some urgency and had their best shooting frame of the day, going 5-18 from the field and a perfect 6 for 6 from the free throw line. McMaster once again mounted a response to ensure the TMU lead of four was within striking distance headed into the final 10 minutes of play.
In a thrilling closing quarter, the Marauders gave the maroon and grey supporters much to cheer for. Exchanging baskets early on in the quarter, McMaster edged closer to the Bold but it wasn't until a 15-6 run in the final three and a half minutes of play where it seemed like the Marauders couldn't miss that truly was the difference maker. McMaster secured the victory on home court for the second time this season.
TMU and McMaster traded buckets for most of the game, resulting in 11 lead changes and 12 ties. The Marauders had a solid game with 44 rebounds, 16 assists and 34 bench points, earning the maroon and grey its first victory over the Bold since 2013.
