Marauders outlasted by Queen's in 79-76 loss

HAMILTON, Ont. - A strong second half for the McMaster Marauders women's basketball team wasn't enough to sink the visiting Queen's Gaels as McMaster dropped its Sunday matinee 79-76.

McMaster led by as many as 10 points in the third quarter, but the relentless Gaels offense that saw four shooters score double digits kept chipping away. Queen's would work to build up a nine point edge in the final frame before the Marauders began to mount their comeback bid.

Down by just three points with the final possession, the Marauders found themselves with a chance to give the home crowd some fireworks. A quick cycle from Arianne Soriano to Deanna Mataseje left a wide-open Jenna Button in the corner, who launched a would-be game-tying three pointer that came up short.

Cassie Joli-Coeur provided some much appreciated help for the McMaster offense, shooting 11-for-16 from the floor - good for a career-high 23 points. The six-foot-three forward from Johnston, Ont. chipped in five boards and three assists, but committed five turnovers in the loss.

Sarah Gates followed up a historic 47 point night on Friday with a cool 34 point effort against Queen's. She also added a team-high seven rebounds.

Four of the Gaels' starters finished in double digits, including Laura Donovan who provided 18 points and four made three-pointers in her team's win. Forward Bridget Mulholland added 16 points, nine rebounds, four steals and a blocked shot.

Next Up

McMaster will look to get back on track next Friday when the team hosts the uncharacteristically winless (and reigning OUA Champion) TMU Bold, before another tough test Saturday against QEW rival Brock Badgers, who made the U SPORTS Final 8 tournament a year ago.
