Men's basketball picks up first conference win, beat Lions 89-61

HAMILTON, Ont. - The McMaster Marauders men's basketball team took care of business Friday night against the York Lions with an 89-61 victory in their home opener.

Mike DeMagus and Mychael Paulo led the way for the maroon and grey with 24 and 15 points respectively, while newcomer Khalil Miller provided a spark off the bench with 17 points, 19 rebounds and six blocks in 29 minutes of action.

The visiting Lions would jump out to a nine-point lead early on, but McMaster used the last five minutes of the second quarter to chip away and regain control with two minutes remaining in the half. The two teams traded jabs until midway through the third when the Marauders offense found its rhythm and went on a 19-2 run to all but solidify the outcome.

Miller closed out the frame with a two-handed slam off a nice outlet pass from Tyler Garcia, much to the pleasure of those in attendance at Burridge Gymnasium.

A balanced Marauder attack saw 11 different players find the score sheet, including a pair of freshmen in Garcia and Brendan Amoyaw.

Garcia, a first-year guard playing in front of a home crowd for the first time, provided six helpers off the bench in 16 minutes, and knocked down his first points as a Marauder at the 3:54 mark of the fourth quarter.

McMaster's defense held true against a York team that although has struggled to put points on the board this season - holding the Lions to just 30 percent shooting from the field. The Marauders forced 21 turnovers, collected 13 steals, and blocked eight Lion shots - leading to 24 points off turnovers for the home side.

Next Up

The Marauders will have a day off Saturday to prepare for their next game - a 3 p.m. tip-off Sunday, Nov. 13 against the Queen's Gaels.

The last time that the Gaels and Marauders met was during the 2019-20 season where the Gaels narrowly beat the Marauders 95-97. The Queen's Gaels are coming off wins against Ontario Tech, Nipissing and Laurentian to open the season. After Friday's win against York, the Marauders will look to prove they can hang with the conference's top talent as they take on the 2021-22 OUA West Semi-Finalists.
