Marauders collect six points from weekend series with Thunderbirds

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - After facing the top-ranked York Lions last weekend, the McMaster Marauders looked to get back in the win column on the longest road trip of the year. McMaster and Algoma faced each other twice this weekend and with six points available, the maroon and grey needed to be in peak form.

The Marauders dropped Algoma 4-0 on Saturday before edging the hometown Thunderbirds 2-1 on Sunday.

Saturday October 15 - Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

On Saturday, the Marauders got on the scoreboard twice in the opening 15 minutes of play. Jordan Baker (Hamilton, Ont.) scored the first goal for the maroon and grey, his first of the season, to take an early 1-0 lead. Just minutes later Sachin Sargeant (Lynden, Ont.) doubled the Marauders' lead. Bernardo Illoz (Vancouver, B.C.) added one more before the halftime whistle in the 38th minute. Illoz would end one more to make the final 4-0 in favour of the visitors.

Ethan Cagalj (Stoney Creek, Ont.) was in net for the win and recorded the shutout.

Sunday October 16 - Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

After collecting three points on Saturday, the Marauders had the full six points in sight in the second contest of the weekend. Similar to the meeting the previous day, McMaster opened the scoring early, this time on a goal from Sargeant in the 13th minute of play. Ahmad Mansour (Waterdown, Ont.) would add his own just six minutes later to lead 2-0 at the halftime break. That scoreline would stand until injury time when Algoma got on the board to cut the lead to one. Despite the final push by the home team, the maroon and grey held on for the win and the three points.

Jonathan Vaughan (Cobourg, Ont.) made seven saves throughout the contest for the win.

The Marauders improve to 7-3-1 and sit at second place in the OUA West standings while the Thunderbirds remain winless at 0-10.
