Marauders lock up #2 seed in post-season with victory in regular season finale

HAMILTON, Ont. - The McMaster Marauders men's soccer team faced the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in the 2022 OUA regular season finale. The maroon and grey secured the win with a 4-1 final on Sunday afternoon to clinch the #2 seed in the conference and a second round home playoff game.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair with both teams battling throughout the opening 45 minutes. The Marauders broke the deadlock late in the first half on an extra time goal from Sachin Sargeant (Lynden, Ont.), his third of the season, to put the Marauders ahead 1-0 at halftime. Miles Green (Toronto, Ont.) was credited with the assist.

After the break, it was all Marauders. Justin Baker (Hamilton, Ont.) recorded his first goal for McMaster, putting the ball past the Laurier goalkeeper in the 60th minute to double the maroon and grey's lead. Green picked up his second assist of the day. Five minutes later, the Golden Hawks were assessed a red card and dropped to ten men. Green would take advantage of being up a man, scoring in the 77th minute and again in the 81st minute to go up 4-0. Devon Crow (North Vancouver, B.C.) recorded an assist. Laurier would get one back late but never truly threatened the Marauders. McMaster secured the 4-1 victory.

McMaster and Laurier combined for 29 shots during the contest. Green led the Marauder attack with eight shots, four of which were on target. Ethan Cagalj (Stoney Creek, Ont.) was in net for McMaster and recorded four saves throughout the match.

The Marauders end the season with an 8-3-1 record, the second best in the OUA West conference.
