HAMILTON, Ont. - The OUA season is wrapping up with just two weeks left on the regular season schedule. The Marauders are in the playoff picture but will need to take care of business in the next two contests to ensure they aren't on the outside looking in. Last Friday's game was a runaway for the maroon and grey, dropping the Guelph Gryphons 41-12. This weekend, the Marauders will look to continue the momentum and hand the Gaels their first loss of the season at Richardson Stadium.
McMaster @ Queen's
Richardson Stadium | Kingston, Ont.
October 15th, 2022 @ 3pm
McMaster and Queen's last met during the 2018 season at Ron Joyce Stadium. McMaster won a nail-biter 27-24. A 10-point fourth quarter gave the Marauders the breathing room they needed to earn the win that day. The past two contests have been decided by just three points so Saturday's game is sure to be a thriller. McMaster does edge the all-time series 18-12 and has won nine of the last eleven contests.
Last weekend,
Andreas Dueck (Winnipeg, Man.) completed 18 of 27 attempts for 165 yards and recorded one touchdown and one interception. He was sacked four times.
Daniel Bosett (Brantford, Ont.) had his best game of the season with 105 rushing yards including a long of 26. The senior recorded one receiving touchdown and a pick six for his second major. On the defence,
Tayo Smith (Hamilton, Ont.) led all Marauders with five solo tackles and
DeEmetrius Masuka (Hamilton, Ont.) recorded two interceptions. From a kicking standpoint, Ben MacDonald (Kamloops, B.C.) went 4 for 5 on field goal attempts and punted six times.
Queen's (5-1) is coming off the bye week after putting up an impressive 123 points in two wins against the Guelph Gryphons (62-11) and York Lions (61-2). The Gaels have one of the top offenses in the OUA, leading in passing yards per attempt (10.0), 1st downs (172), field goal percentage (100) and sacks (17).
The Marauders have the top performing passing offence in the conference, with a total of 1596 passing yards this season, averaging 266.0 passing yards per game. The Marauders also lead the OUA in defensive interceptions with 10.
On the offense, the Gaels use the ground game to their advantage. Running back, Anthony Soles, leads the OUA and the nation in rushing touchdowns with 10. He averages 7.3 yards per rush and 108.8 yards per game - ranking him seventh in both categories in U SPORTS. On the other side of the ball, defensive lineman, Silas Hubert, is second in the conference in sacks with five on the season for a loss of 41 yards. The Marauders will face some tough competition this weekend but if the maroon and grey can apply pressure and shutdown the Gaels' run game, spectators should be in for another close contest.
The Marauders will return home to Ron Joyce Stadium next Saturday for the 2022 OUA regular season finale. McMaster will face the Toronto Varsity Blues in a contest with tons of playoff implications. Game time is set for 1pm on Saturday October 22nd.
All Time
The Marauders and Gaels first met in 1903 and have met 30 times prior to this weekend's contest. McMaster leads the all-time series 18-12.
Last Time Out
In last week's Thanksgiving showdown with the Gryphons, the maroon and grey's defence put on a showcase and was integral to securing the second win of the season. McMaster intercepted Jake Helfrich three times and picked off Tommy Yanchuk twice. The Marauder defence held the Gryphons to just 131 yards of offence and eight first downs throughout the Friday night contest.
