McMaster Summer Camps Update 4/19

Camps Jay Barlett, Communications

Department of Athletics & Recreation Camps planning underway, registration for 2021 to open May 17

A summer tradition for Hamilton area youth since 1977, McMaster Sport Fitness School has been a constant in sharing the joys of play, learning and friendship with our community while building memories that last a lifetime. Although 2020 saw our traditions put on hold, the McMaster Athletics & Recreation Camps team has been hard at work to re-imaging our programming to deliver the best possible experience in today's climate while focusing on the health and safety of your children.

Under guidance from the Ontario Camps Association (OCA), Hamilton Public Health, and McMaster University, the Department of Athletics & Recreation is planning to hold limited in-person summer camps on campus beginning July 5th. Sport Fitness School will be the only camp program offered this summer and we will not be running Mini-University or Marauder Sport Camps. There will be more updates regarding the possibility of offering Marauder Skills Development Clinics later in the spring.

The OCA has a task force of camp experts who are working alongside public health officials, medical personnel and government representatives to put forth a comprehensive plan for all camps that will put the health and safety of your children at the forefront. We will be implementing a number of significant adaptations to our programming to promote a safe environment for children and camps staff, while maintaining the primary objective of summer camp - to have fun!

At this time, our plan is to open online registration for Sport Fitness School on Monday, May 17th, with camps running July 5th - August 27th. More information, including program dates, health and safety measures, policies and procedures, and FAQ's will be released in the coming weeks, so please stay tuned at https://rec.mcmaster.ca/programs/youth-camps-march-break-summer.

As we've learned over the past year, things can change quickly - McMaster Camps and the university will continue to assess on a daily basis the COVID-19 situation and any changes to public health recommendations. McMaster Camps programming may be subject to change or cancellation with limited notice. We appreciate your understanding.

We will look to provide further updates when more information becomes available in the coming weeks. Life just isn't the same without summer camp and we can't wait to make more memories together!
