The McMaster Marauders men's volleyball team came back to beat the Windsor Lancers 3-2 on Saturday night in their opening season game.
Â
At the St. Denis Centre in Windsor, Ont., the Marauders began the night by winning the first set 25-20.
Â
However, the precedent that McMaster laid out was challenged by the eager Lancers, who came back to win the next two sets 25-19 and 25-21.
Â
Down by one set, the Marauders didn't give up and they rallied to win the third set with a close 25-23 final score.
Â
Tied at 2-2, and going into the fifth and final game, it was all or nothing for both teams.
Â
However, the Marauders came away from the last set with a 15-7 win, showing the Lancers that the impression from the first set was correct.
Â
Offence from both teams was intense and close, with 147 and 151 total attacks for McMaster and Windsor, respectively.
Â
It was the Marauders besiege that reigned victorious though with an incredible 58 kills on the Lancers court.
Â
Sam Cooper led McMaster from the attack line with 20 kills, followed by
Mateusz Wlodarski with 13 and
Max Gratton with 11.
Â
Robbie Fujisawa made 48 assists for the Marauders, a major aid in their win.
Â
On the defensive side,
Wojtek Kraj put up 13 of McMaster's 18 blocks to put a stop to the Lancers, who only managed to grab 14.
Â
Returning Windsor's attacks, McMaster had 54 digs, Fujisawa leading with 11.
Â
The Marauders are set to take on the Gryphons next in Guelph on Nov. 12.
