The McMaster Marauders got back to winning ways on Saturday afternoon, taking down the Guelph Gryphons 74-70 at Burridge Gym.
Sarah Gates led all players with 38 points, and 11 rebounds, shooting 66.7% from field goal range in 33 minutes of action. Gates played a stand out game, setting a career high in points.
The squad came out blazing, wanting to rewrite their defeat only a few days ago on the road.
Mia Spadafora showed up with intensity and racked up seven points, three rebounds and two blocks. Spadafora put up six of her points in the first quarter, with two three pointers - one with six minutes left on the clock and the second with one minute and thirty five left. The late three in the first put the Marauders up 18-15, and they held the lead for the remainder of the match.
In the second quarter, the Marauders were sinking shots, with a 62.5% three-point shooting percentage and a strong 55.6% shooting from field goal range. Playing a defensive third quarter, the maroon kept the Gryphons to 25% shooting average from the floor and from behind the arc.
Both teams grabbed 33 rebounds a piece, keeping pace within the paint, but the Marauders ultimately put away the win 74-70. The team currently holds the same record as Guelph, with Marauders moving up to 3-1 to sit tied atop to the OUA West standings.
The Marauders will look to continue their winning streak as they travel to Sault St. Marie next weekend to face off against the Algoma Thunderbirds next Friday and Saturday.
