The McMaster Marauders men's basketball team took home the victory against the Guelph Gryphons 123-121, in the match that went to overtime.
Mychael Paulo was the Marauders' top scorer of the match with 21 points and four assists, however, the stats speak to the team effort the win was. Among Paulo, the other point leaders of the match were Jordan Henry with 19, Sefa Otchere with 18, and Tristian Lindo with 16. Malcolm Glanville led all scorers of the match with 35 for the Gryphons.
In some back-back basketball, the men in Maroon finished the first quarter with a one-point lead of 28-27. The Gryphons came out blazing in the second quarter, but the Marauders held them down. With a tied game and 0:34 seconds remaining on the clock, the Gryphons threw up a jump shot to take the lead, 47-49 right before the half.
In the third quarter, the Marauders shot a healthy 50.0% from the field goal range and raked up 16 points. The team also landed a 50.0% 3-PT. shooting average in the fourth. It was Tristan Lindo that hit a solid 3-pt. jump shot 1:33 left on the clock to give the squad a one-point lead. With both teams knocking down points back and forth, the match found itself tied 106-106 at the end of regular time.
With five minutes of overtime, the team went back to the basics and played strong basketball. In the minutes of OT, the Marauders put up 17 points - shooting 6-9 - while only allowing the Gryphons to put 15 points up. Paulo locked away a vital jump shot with 0:36 seconds remaining and then collected another on a free throw, to seal in the match and the victory.
The Marauders hope to continue their winning streak as they play the Gryphons again on Saturday afternoon at home. Tip-off is set for 3 PM.
