Women's Basketball: Marauders Clinch Top Spot in OUA West with 91-72 Win over Gryphons

McMaster enjoys a bye through the first playoff round and will host an OUA quarterfinal on February 23

On a night dedicated to their seniors, it was fitting that fifth-year veteran Hilary Hanaka led the Marauders to their 20th victory of the season at Burridge Gym Wednesday.

Hanaka had a game high 24 points while hitting four of five attempts from the beyond the arc, as McMaster eased to a 91-72 win over Guelph to conclude its home schedule in the OUA regular season.

With the result, the U SPORTS no. 3-ranked Marauders clinched the top seed in the OUA West with one game left to be played before the onset of the conference playoffs, and will enjoy a bye through the opening round.

McMaster will play host to an OUA quarterfinal at Burridge Gym on Saturday, February 23 at 2:00 p.m.

Playing in her final regular season game at home, alongside three other graduating Marauders including fellow OUA all-star Linnaea Harper, guard Erin Burns and forward Evie Streight, Hanaka brought one of her most efficient shooting performances of the season to bear.

She hit 10 of 16 attempts from the field Wednesday, and was 80 per cent from three, leading a group of four Marauders who eclipsed double digits in points.

Christina Buttenham (18), Sarah Gates (16) and Harper (14) also reached that threshold in the win.

Displaying their typical prowess and pressure on defence, the Marauders forced 27 turnovers from the Gryphons, while committing just 12 themselves.

Never trailing after scoring the game's first five points, the Marauders led by as many as 19 in the fourth quarter and steadily built on their advantage after opening up a nine-point lead through the first 10 minutes.

NEXT UP: McMaster concludes the regular season with a trip to London on Saturday, February 16, where the Marauders will meet the Western Mustangs. That game is set to tip off at 1:00 p.m. and can be seen live on OUA.tv.
