Women's Basketball: Harper Hits 1,000-Point Threshold as Marauders Thrash Mustangs to Conclude Regular Season

The forward became the seventh Marauder to hit the career scoring milestone

Linnaea Harper joined her teammate on an exclusive list Saturday, as the Marauders closed out the OUA's regular season in typically emphatic fashion in London.

The senior forward scored 19 points to break the 1,000-point threshold for her career on its last day, as McMaster rumbled to a 98-44 win to notch its second win of 50-plus points in the past two weeks.

Harper concluded her OUA career with 1,003 points, and sits seventh on McMaster's career scoring list behind teammate Hilary Hanaka, who hit the threshold earlier this season and concluded her own career Saturday with a total of 1,136 points.

Mac's lopsided victory over Western saw the Marauders wrap up the regular season with a 21-3 record, and uncontested atop the OUA West division standings. Their seeding affords the Marauders a bye through the opening round of the conference playoffs, and ensures that they will host an OUA quarterfinal at Burridge Gym on Saturday, February 23 at 2:00 p.m.

Harper made her historic charge with one of the most well-rounded efforts of the season, and led the Marauders with 19 points and 15 rebounds to record her eighth double double of the campaign.

Fellow forward Olivia Wilson also notched a double double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while missing just one of her six shooting attempts from the field.

Also cracking double digits in points, Sarah Gates (17), Christina Buttenham (13) and Mia Spadafora (12) helped round out a balanced attack for the Marauders in the win.

McMaster's 54-point margin of victory Saturday was its second-largest of the season, trailing only the 55-point, 102-47 win that the Marauders enjoyed over the Algoma Thunderbirds on February 9.

Never trailing over the course of Saturday's game, the Marauders incredibly reeled off the first 18 points of the contest, and held the Mustangs without a basket until the four-minute mark of the first quarter.

The lopsided nature of the contest allowed McMaster to empty its bench early and often, as the Marauders managed to find court time for 12 different players.

NEXT UP: The Marauders await the results of the OUA West's first round match ups on Wednesday, February 20 to decide their quarterfinal opponent. McMaster will host that final eight contest at Burridge Gym on Saturday, February 23 at 2:00 p.m. The game will be webcast live on OUA.tv and available on TSN 1150 radio.
