Men’s Volleyball: Marauders Down Nipissing In Four Sets

The Marauders men's volleyball team picked up their fourth victory of the season on Saturday afternoon.

McMaster defeated the OUA East leading Nipissing Lakers in four sets, taking the match 25-21, 24-26, 25-18, 25-19 to move to 4-1 on the season.

The win moves the Marauders two points behind the idle Guelph Gryphons, who lead the OUA West at 5-0.

Matt Passalent and Nathan Delguidice led the Marauders with 19.5 points each, as Delguidice edged out his teammate on kills 16-15 on the afternoon. Passalent also collected four of the team's 10 service aces. Craig Ireland posted 11.5 points on eight kills, a service ace and five block assists.

Nipissing took an early lead in the first set before the Marauders jumped ahead 8-7 on an attack error by the Lakers. McMaster then built up a 16-9 lead as the teams hit the technical timeout. The Lakers pushed back late in the set, but the lead that the Marauders built up held for the set victory.

The second set provided a lot of the drama, as the teams battled for the lead in the middle portion of the set. After McMaster moved ahead 5-2, Nipissing tied the set at five before side-out volleyball struck, with the Marauders leading by a point at the technical timeout thanks to a Tyler Pavelic kill.

The teams continued to trade points, before the Lakers struck for four consecutive points to take a two-point lead. A Josh Eckland kill and a Ben Kerkhoff ace evened the set at 24, but Nipissing would take the next two points on a service error and a Liam Lidlow kill to even the match at a set apiece.

It was a slightly easier time for the Marauders in the third, as they took a 9-5 lead on back-to-back Delguidice kills, and a 16-10 lead at the technical timeout. As the set progressed, Nipissing looked to make a comeback, but it was snuffed out as the Marauders reeled off four consecutive points to move to 24-15. Wojtek Kraj finished off the set with a kill to put McMaster within a set of victory.

The fourth went much of the same way as the third, with McMaster controlling it after going down 4-1 early. After a Passalent kill for a 7-6 Marauders lead, the visitors went on to hold the lead throughout the remainder of the set, with Passalent knocking down the final kill to end the match.

McMaster will head to North York on Friday, November 15th to take on the York Lions at the Tait Gymnasium.  First serve is scheduled for 8:00 PM.
