Men's Volleyball: Merciless Marauders Dump Lions in Straight Sets

No. 4-ranked McMaster improved to 5-1 with the win

Ruthless from the first whistle to the last, the Marauders put together one of the most complete efforts in recent memory to blast past the York Lions in Toronto Friday.

McMaster improved to 5-1 with a 25-12, 25-13, 25-17 victory over York and hit .328 as a team in a blistering offensive performance.

Committing just 10 errors as a team, the Marauders produced 29 kills on 58 attempts, and were equally predatory from the service line, where they hammered down nine aces versus just five errors.

By way of harsh comparison, the Lions were held to just .013 hitting as a group, with 23 kills and 22 errors, while committing a minus 10 from the service line with four aces and 14 errors.

A week after returning to the McMaster lineup, veteran right side Nathan Delguidice put in a brilliant shift Friday, and led his team with nine kills on 18 attempts versus just three errors (.333). He added an ace, a solo block and a block assist for a match high of 11.5 points.

Fellow outside hitter Matt Passalent also eclipsed double digits in points, with seven kills, three aces and a block assist for 10.5 total points.

Reaping the rewards of a McMaster offence that found newfound space for the middle attack, second-year Tyler Pavelic finished the night at .500 after killing five of eight attempts with just one error. He added two aces, two solo blocks and two block assists for 10 points.

Easily headlining the night on the defensive end, McMaster libero Jordan Pereira led all players with 10 digs over the course of the brief three-set encounter.

The Marauders set the tone harshly in the first set, racing out to a 7-1 lead and sending the Lions to an early timeout when Delguidice tooled the block with serious pace from the right wing.

Keeping momentum firmly in their corner, the Marauders had a 10-point lead at the technical timeout and only continued to accelerate from there, ultimately closing out the set when the Lions committed one of several service errors for 25-12.

Turning to some off-speed offence to tilt a few extended rallies in the early stages of the second set, the Marauders continued to hold sway and sent the Lions to another scrambly timeout at 13-4. The visitors were doubling up the hosts at the technical timeout and did not slow down in the late stages.

Passalent turned to his speediest swing down the line to bring up set points at 24-13, and the Marauders needed just one look, as Craig Ireland hammered a spin serve that painted the back line for 25-13.

Jumping out to another early lead, the Marauders once again found themselves doubling up the Lions at the technical timeout when Doty managed to fit the quick set to Tyler Pavelic into a tiny window, and the middle duly slotted it away for 16-8.

Dave Preston burned a timeout with his team showing a moment of vulnerability in the late stages of the third, with a pair of errors bringing the Lions within five at 22-17. But Mac responded strongly after the sit down, and ripped off the next three points in succession to end the match.

NEXT UP: The Marauders look to extend their winning streak with a return to home court Saturday, as they play host to the Toronto Varsity Blues to cap a four-event Super Saturday in Hamilton. The 8:00 p.m. match will be available live and on demand on OUA.tv.
