Men's Volleyball: No. 4 Marauders Dispatch No. 9 Blues in Straight Sets

McMaster completed a perfect weekend by winning all six sets played Friday and Saturday

Recapturing some of the incredible form they demonstrated on the road a night earlier, the Marauders returned to Burridge Gym and dispatched the no. 9-ranked Toronto Blues in short order Saturday.

McMaster completed a perfect weekend by winning all six sets played over the course of two days, and wrapped up a 25-18, 25-17, 25-21 win over the newly-ranked Toronto to improve to 6-1 on the season and deal the Blues their first loss of the campaign in the process.

Hitting .275 as a team in the win, with a high-water mark of .364 in the opening set, the Marauders held their opponents to just .014 as a group, with the Blues offence ground to a halt with 21 kills and 20 errors.

Veteran right side Nathan Delguidice led Mac with nine kills in the win, which he achieved on 21 attempts with just four errors (.238) while adding an ace and four solo blocks for a match high 14 points.

Following close behind, Matt Passalent notched eight kills on 17 attempts and committed just a single error (.412), while hitting two aces and adding a solo block.

Rookie middle Wojtek Krai had a career night on offence with five kills, and had two solo blocks for good measure.

Wasting no time in grabbing the momentum, the Marauders won six of the first eight points Saturday, and carried a 16-13 lead into the technical timeout when David Doty took matters into his own hands.

Ripping off a 4-1 sequence to bring up set points at 24-17, when Krai tipped the quick set through the middle, the Marauders ended the set two points later with Toronto's Adam Lu dumping service.

Another quick start saw the Marauders vault to a 7-3 lead after an error by the Blues Evan Falardeau, and the lead had swelled to six when the teams hit the technical timeout, as Falardeau once again misfired.

There was little pushback to be had from the visitors, and the host Marauders brought the second set to an uneventful end with a string of three successive points, as Toronto's Jasper Neale followed a Passalent block with a miss to bring up set points and another Blues error, this time from Chris Towe, provided the dagger at 25-17.

McMaster was well on its way in the third with another quick start, as a pair of Toronto errors pushed the home side ahead 10-5. With a 4-1 sequence, that lead became six points wide at the technical timeout, as Neale dumped serve to push Mac ahead 16-10.

Showing some late resolve, the Blues pulled to within just two points of the Marauders at 21-19 after a pair of Towe aces, but that was as close as the visitors would come. Stabilizing with a pair of points in response, the Marauders brought up four match points at 24-20 on a kill from Ireland, and ended the night two points later when Krai denied the Blues Jordan Figueira.

NEXT UP: McMaster concludes the fall portion of its conference schedule on Saturday, November 23, when the Marauders welcome the Waterloo Warriors to Burridge Gym for an 8:00 p.m. match.
