Men's Volleyball: Marauders Demolish Warriors in Straight Sets

McMaster held Waterloo to a negative hitting percentage with 19 errors and 15 kills

Continuing their torrid run of recent form, the Marauders made short work of the Waterloo Warriors at Burridge Gym Saturday.

McMaster held Waterloo to a negative hitting percentage en route to a 25-18, 25-14, 25-12 win that improved the no. 4-ranked Marauders to 7-1 in conference play.

With the result, the Marauders closed the book on the fall portion of their OUA schedule, and break for exams and the holidays.

Veteran outside hitter Nathan Delguidice led all scorers Saturday with 13 kills, and added two solo blocks for a match high of 15 points.

Teammate Craig Ireland also excelled offensively, with 11 kills on 22 attempts versus just four errors (.318).

Opening what proved to be a decisive lead with three consecutive points to head into the technical timeout, Mac led 16-13 after a block by Dylan Romero-Marshall. That was part of a five-point run by the hosts, who pulled away late to take the first when Passalent sealed the block for 25-18.

McMaster accelerated in the second, and after Waterloo setter Colm Guyn was called on a double contact, the Marauders had a 16-8 lead at the technical timeout. With Dave Preston beginning to flex his team's depth as the second set became ever more lopsided, the Marauders earned 10 set points when rookie Sam Cooper obliterated a cut shot for 24-14.

The hosts needed just one of those, ending the second and taking a 2-0 stranglehold over the match when Isaac Nesbitt's shot sailed long.

Wasting no time in asserting their dominance to open the third, the Marauders sent the Warriors to a timeout by winning eight of the first 11 points played. A seven-point run, capped by a Doty ace, helped Mac pull ahead 18-6, and the hosts coasted to the finish line from there, converting their second match point when Cooper knocked down his third and final kill of the night.
