Roberts' Lone Goal Wins It, Marauders Hand Gryphons First Loss of 2018

McMaster won their third match on the trot Sunday

Fresh from an inspired win on the road, and with momentum turning their way, the Marauders kept the good times rolling Sunday at Ron Joyce Stadium.

McMaster reeled off a third successive victory, while dealing its opponent its first loss of 2018, with a 1-0 win over Guelph on a dour afternoon.

Veteran forward Stephanie Roberts scored the game's only goal on the stroke of halftime, knocking in from a corner to give the hosts the edge.

Making her first appearance of the season, goalkeeper Jayashree Pathak stopped the only shot she faced to secure the first win, and clean sheet, of her career.

After weathering early pressure and midfield probing from the Gryphons earlier in the first half, the Marauders began to find some purchase offensively near its end.

Their breakthrough almost came 40 minutes on, when Roberts came unmarked on the back post of a corner kick, but was just unable to make contact.

That play proved to be foreshadowing, as, minutes later, the forward once again found a corner kick in front of her, managing to squeeze a short-range effort through traffic and past the keeper at the near post in the 44th minute.

Assured in possession of the one-goal lead, McMaster saw out the second half without much incident on the defensive side, as the top team in the OUA West managed just four shooting attempts against the Marauders over 90 minutes, and failed to score for just the third time this season.

NEXT UP: McMaster takes to the road for the penultimate road trip of the season, visiting St. Catharines and the Brock Badgers on Saturday, October 6 before heading to Waterloo to battle the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday, October 7.
