Women's Soccer: Mustangs Overturn First Half Deficit, Beat Marauders 2-1

A pair of breaks saw the Marauders concede twice inside three minutes early in the second half

A pair of contentious breaks early in the second half Friday flipped the game at Ron Joyce Stadium on its head, and the Marauders were unable to recover.

Leading 1-0 at the half, McMaster conceded twice inside the first 10 minutes of the second and fell 2-1 to Western.

With the result, the Marauders dropped to 2-3-3 on the season, and sit fifth in the OUA West standings through eight matches played.

Veteran forward Stephanie Roberts scored McMaster's lone goal in the defeat.

Western began to tilt the field midway through the opening half, spending long stretches of possession in the McMaster end of the pitch. But the Marauders were organized in defence, and gave little away in front of goalkeeper Juliana Hifawi.

They were rewarded for their steadfast defending in the 36th minute, when, after being played into the box, Roberts was brought down and earned a penalty. She stepped to the spot and dispatched it herself, for her team-leading seventh goal of the season, to give McMaster a 1-0 lead.

That advantage held until the break, but was very quickly overturned early in the second half, as the Marauders back line fell victim to a pair of controversial onside play-ins from the Mustangs.

The first saw Morgan Asling break through the McMaster line in the 49th minute and squeeze a shot past Marauders goalkeeper Juliana Hiwafi to level the game, as questions were raised in the Ron Joyce Stadium stands.

Three minutes later, another close decision saw the flag stay down as Julia Crnjac broke free and scored to give Western a sudden and dramatic lead.

Probing for a tying goal, the Marauders got their best chance for one in the 78th minute, as Roberts found room along the left wing before whipping in a low cross that found Claudia Continenza unmarked. But the fullback was unable to make contact with the ball as it skidded past, and Western's lead survived a scare.

Hiwafi earned a yellow card in just two minutes later, racing out of the box to challenge a Western forward, and was forced to punch the ensuing set piece over her crossbar to keep Mac within a goal.

NEXT UP: The Marauders continue their home stand on Sunday, September 23, when they welcome the Windsor Lancers to Ron Joyce Stadium for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
