Men's Soccer: Kovacevic Hat Trick Fires Mac Past Western 3-0

The Marauders swept the home-and-home series against their traditional division rivals

A week removed from one of their most disappointing nights in recent memory, the Marauders chased their demons in emphatic fashion Friday.

McMaster produced its best effort of 2018 to thoroughly outclass Western at Ron Joyce Stadium, with a hat trick from Dusan Kovacevic providing the fireworks in a 3-0 victory.

The performance marked a complete about-face from a dispiriting 2-1 loss to the Brock Badgers a week earlier, with the Marauders controlling the middle of the park and threatening goal early and often Friday.

With the win, McMaster claimed all six points against Western for the season, improving to 4-2-2 to solidify its hold on fourth in the OUA West standings.

Kovacevic and the Marauders signalled their intent early, as the striker found the back of the net for the first time in just the third minute of the match.

Controlling from a long throw, he turned and drilled a heavy shot that beat Western keeper Kody Thompson cleanly to give the hosts the lead.

From there, McMaster continued to attack and menace throughout the first half, showing their superiority in possession repeatedly but unable to find a second finish before the whistle blew for the break.

That changed in the 65th minute, when a beautifully-worked forward move saw midfielder Anand Sergeant pick out the run of captain Yunus Mollayev, who drew Thompson to him before laying off for Kovacevic. All that remained was a simple touch into the open netting, which the striker duly delivered for his second goal of the night.

Just five minutes later, Kovacevic capped his rampant night and the Marauders hammered the final nail into their opponents' coffin, when Sergeant's initial shot was parried by Thompson only to fall into the path of the striker, who slotted home yet again.

NEXT UP: McMaster closes out the home stand at Ron Joyce Stadium Sunday with a 3:15 p.m. kickoff against the Windsor Lancers.
